It was conceived and created by Bendrew Jong, taking 3 years to gain approval. 324 Tappan Terrace was the last lot of the subdivision, approached by a winding, single car driveway up to an isolated sandstone outcropping at the very end. The 2 acre site is extremely private with views of the valley, western hills of the Regional Park, Briones reservoir, EBMUD watershed , and, on a clear day, the North Bay and Marin County.

The sellers had collected a number of beautiful small sculpture pieces and the architect, Bendrew Jong, AIA, saw  how the owners’ desire for a gallery to enjoy their collection and the characteristics of the site could lead to a unique solution. The design that unfolded was practical and efficient. Anchoring the main part of the house on the upper part of the ridge, then cantilevering a long “gallery” over the 2-car garage and turnaround area to create a “level” one floor living space, kept a low profile that blended with the hill. Even the choice of color and texture was made to blend the house into the landscape.

The 20’ width between the garage and the entrance created space for the gallery , which was supported by long glue- laminated beams to bridge the flat open area.. The interior sitting area and deck are at the south end of the bridge so to use the “living room” one can walk through and enjoy the gallery, with views to the east and west of the lake and hills surrounding the house.  The open space accommodates entertaining, and a range of activities.

The structural engineering was specified to be conservative by the owner, a civil engineer, and additional piers were anchored to bedrock.

Aside from the grand gallery, the home’s floor plan features an open kitchen/dining area which flows out to the rear garden and level deck, the gallery and family room with balcony, a master suite with private deck nestled in trees, and two additional bedrooms and full bath on the living level. The entry level has a half bath, a home gym with extra storage and large home office, both of which could be used as bedrooms.

Over the years, trails and stairs were added to the one acre valley, as well as a gazebo with its own views on the southern extension of the ridge.   The north aspect of the site also has a play-set for grandchildren and vegetable garden protected from deer and rabbits.

For 37 years, from conception until now, the original family has loved living at 324 Tappan Terrace. The next owners will enjoy this special property and the serenity of this private setting.
